Lightning caught onto dancing very quickly just by watching the other ponies dance. At first she looked a little weird and got a few strange glances. But as they pushed through the crowd, she began to think of it as more like acrobatics. Stunt tricks without her wings. She knew anypony would be blown over if she was swinging those things around.

They slowly worked their way towards the center, but a knowing glance from the princess had her pushing towards the VIP room hanging over the bar. Lightning tapped Gold on the shoulder, and gently dragged her off of the dance floor. Even at the rate she was going, she was able to get out of the mosh and back onto the glass floors.

She lead Gold into the VIP room and almost regretted it immediately. It's not every day you catch a Princess making out with another mare.

"Ah, my student. Come in."

As they entered the other mares and stallion, who she thought she recognized as hne of Luna's guards, shuffled back out onto the dance floor.

"Excuse my minor disgression. I cut loose down here, but we usually save that for more private settings. Where's your third? I thought I saw you come in with one."

She levitated a glass of wine to her lips, taking a large sip.

Gold waved a hoof at that.

"I wouldn't worry about Stone. She'll get here one or another."

The loud shifting and scraping noise brought Gold's eyes back to the entrance of the VIP room. She laughed deeply at the sight of a the large mare known as Stone Wall pushing her way through the thick crowds until she finally came into view.

Of course, the last of the way wasn't hard when the ponies surrounding the entrance saw the living concrete wall walk on four legs make her way to them.

"So, yeah, I guess this is our third! Or something."

Gold took ahold of one of the wine glasses and poured a reasonable amount into the glass, trying to show some respect to the Princess of the Night.

She sipped it as she took a seat that was previously occupied by a stallion.

"Hmm, excellent year. I may not be a drinking enthusiast, but I know good alcohol when I taste it."

She looked up at the Princess.

"I gotta say Princess Luna. I never took ya for a party pony. I figured you for the 'lone wolf' type, where you fly around in the night and keep vigil over us."

Gold giggled lightly as she took another sip from the glass.

"And I think this stuff is stronger than I thought it was."

Her face turned a little red.

"I'm detecting 'shock and awe' in this drink. I feel warm already."

Stone reached over and took the glass from Gold, who only whined at the lost of her alcohol. She grasped the bottle, read the label, and placed it back on the table.

"I apologize, Your Majesty, for Gold's behavior. I don't know why, but she's rather...'sensitive' to wine."

Luna chuckled. "It's quite alright. This is aged about two hundred years. Not terribly strong, but it suits me fine." She swished back the last of her drink, placing the empty glass on the table.

"I think you've made a fine choice in Lightning, girls. I'm not quite sure how long your arrangement has been going on, but you appear close."

Luna uncorked another bottle and refilled her glass. "I did want to discuss with you a few things, however. My sister wanted me to inform you of the duties you will have to perform and of politics and the boring ho-hum of the aristocracy. To be honest, I prefer to be here where everypony is just in it to have a good time. At least most of the time."

She took a swig of her wine and leaned back on the plush couch. Lightning grabbed herself a glass of wine as well, to be polite, but was unsure of its potency. She took a sip. Strong. She downed it and coughed a few times. Very strong.

"But more important than that is the inheritance so deserved to you. Unfortunately most of House Hurricane's homes are gone, but, we have engineering plans for the original that stood here in Canterlot. Since the museum in Manehatten contains most of the items you are entitled to, you will have to choose whether or not to keep them or to lease them. It would be a good start on earning back the Hurricane fortune."

"You must also be aware that your coming has made many enemies on the council, incuding the many members you will be replacing. They're angry enough to throw a fit. They've threatened to close down Cloudsdale, but we believe they're bluffing. The element of loyaty has been sent to Cloudsdale for that very reason. Just be aware that they will try to goad you into conflict. Ignore them."

Stone sat up straighter in the cushion, still trying to keep Gold away from her glass.

"They must be a little 'off' if they have already threatened ponies with the closing of Cloudsdale. I may not be a pegasus, but I can already see the conflict in that. You close down Cloudsdale, you throw away the delicate weather system that's taken years to perfect. No rain or snow, or even cloud cover translates into a repeat of the drought times. Only this time, it will be caused by them."

Gold raised a brow at Stone.

"I never took you for being a political type. I thought you hated politics."

"I only take notice if they involve me, my friends, and everyone I care for deeply."

She shot a grin and a wink at Lightning as she continued.

"I...never really learned how the political system worked in Equestria, since it seemed pretty straight forward when I was little: The two big ponies in the giant castle had the final say while the rich ponies went around and spent the money they gained to help the needy and poor."

There was a faint 'crack' and Stone quickly set the wine glass down.

It had a large, jagged crack on it's nearly flawless exterior.

"Of course, I later learned that half the money they spend goes to themselves or to the House they are a part of."

She waved a hoof.

"But, back on topic. Like Princess Luna said, you cannot let them lure you into a fight. The seat you are sitting in is more powerful and influential than you think. But it's all in how you use it. It's like my Great-Papa Commander Iceberg said: "It takes only one to build a home's foundation, but it takes the entire group to build a mansion."

She grinned softly.

"So, to put it simply: You have nothing to openly fear about if a bunch of stuffy house members are throwing a fit over a few worn seat cushions. But you must be careful around the ones that are stupid enough to enact on their threat and put Equestria back into the drought times, just for a few worn seat cushions."

Gold stared up at the large mare she lounged against. She laughed lightly.

"Stone, when we get home, I want you to repeat everything you have just said to me in the morning, because I only understood half of that in my state."

She wrapped her hooves around Stone and nuzzled into her neck.

"I'm gonna love you so hard when we get back home."

Stone chuckled lightly and turned a little red.

"Please Gold, control yourself. There are other ponies watching."

Stone cleared her throat.

"But, yes. I don't think you should worry. I don't think any of the nobility are ready to throw away everything and start living like farmers, just because they lost some influence over others. That, or none of them have knocked themselves over the head enough with their gold headdresses to become dumb enough to throw it all away on a cheap threat that they can easily turn the blame onto you if you act upon it."

Gold moved up to Stone's ear.

"So. Hard."

She shoved Gold over and smothered her head into the cushion.

"No more wine for you, missy."

Lightning nodded, but her face was clouded. She had sat on the tribal council before when her mother- former mom, was forced to drag her along. If there was ever any discussion from Prince Blueblood, she never remembered it. Princess Sapphire had more than half of the votes in her pocket. If she was involved in making a threat, it could get very serous, very quickly.

"Stone," she said, trying to ignore Gold's commentary. A blush still occupied her face, "I'm not sure either of you know how serious this might be. The princesses control the duties of major government - justice system, provincial governors, and diplomats all are controlled by the diarchy. But the cities, the military, the weather system? Those are all controlled by the tribes. The dual rule is beneficial because it acts like a system of checks and balances. If the Tribes make a law that doesn't comply with provincial law. If a law is passed by the princesses that limits city and individual choice, the Tribal Council can veto it. If the Council threatens the stopping of the weather system to boycott a brand new member and radically reshaping the council, you better bet they'll have an interest in doing so. Cities that support them will be supplied with weather. Those who aren't will have to rely on wild parts of the world like the Everfree Forest to bring storms and rain."

Luna nodded, "It's possible. But I don't want you to think about that while you're here. That's not why I called you in. I wanted to make sure you were making friends or at least had some after your ordeal. You're more focused when you focus on others."

She rose from her place, downing another glass of wine. "There are a couple of tags on the hook over there. Keep them. You can use this spot whenever I'm not around."

Lightning blushed as she finished off her second glass of wine. It burned her throat as it went down, causing her to cough a little. "But what if you're in here?"

Luna smiled as she opened the door. "Then knock first." With that, she left the three of them alone in the VIP room.

Stone chuckled a little as the door closed.

"I guess there isn't any harm in relaxing for a bit. I never really cared for politics, as I said before. And, well, I guess the Princess technically gave us an order."

Stone looked over at Gold, but stopped.

Gold wasn't currently pulling her head out of the cushions. In fact, she wasn't even there.

Stone looked around.

"Goldy?"

She looked over at the table. Her eyes widened.

Gold was in the middle of downing as much wine as she could straight from the bottle. And already half the bottle was gone.

"Gold!"

She took the bottle from Gold's hooves and put it back on the table. Stone then proceeded to drag the strangely unmoving pegasus back to her seat.

As she set Gold in the seat next to her she cast a look over at Lightning.

"I think you should make sure the door is closed and possibly locked. With how Gold gets when she's drunk, especially on wine....well....let's just say Pyro learned more about herself than a biologist and a doctor could ever hope to."

Stone scooted herself away slightly. Her face started turning red.

"I apologize for everything that may happen and I won't doubt you for leaving. Goldy has these little 'quirks' when she's sober, and she never really shows them. But when drunk...."

Gold began to sway a little in her seat, a dazed look in her eyes. She suddenly sat up straight, her eyes widening. She turned her head slowly towards Stone, her gaze half-lidded.

She smiled.

In a flash, Gold's wings had launched her from her spot towards Stone, too fast for her dodge. Gold landed on top of her, wrapping all four of her legs around Stone's body and nuzzling into her neck.

But that was all she seemed to do.

Gold sighed contently, closed her eyes, and buried her muzzle into Stone's neck. Her speech was a little muffled.

"Mmmm, hugs."

Stone sighed.

"Whew, she's in her 'clingy drunk' state. False alarm. Turns out she won't violate us in the very seats we are sitting in. She'll just cling to you like...uh...umm...like a lost puppy or some kind of koala bear."

Gold's head shot up and she turned her gaze towards Lightning.

She grinned again as she started to pull herself away from Stone.

"Hugs?"

Lightning let go of the lock, as instructed. Gold looked so peaceful and happy clinging to Stone. Her sigh of contentment brought a blush to her face. Suddenly she wasn't sure she should have inserted herself into their relationship. The two of them looked very happy together, while she stood awkwardly on the sidelines.

"Hugs?"

Lightning knew what was coming next, pre-empting the sudden strike by joining the two on the couch. She accepted Gold's embrace, bringing her tight against her body.

"Hey, Stone. I don't mean to intrude, I don't really know much about you." Lighting sighed a little, kissing the drunk Pegasus on her head. "I, uh.. Was wondering about how you met, and uh, what you like and stuff." She was still struggling with the wording even after finishing her sentence.

Stone smiled at the adorable scene of the two pegasi hugging.

"I can't blame you for being curious and all. Our friends still question how a large, imposing mare like myself could ever fall in love with a little ball of fun like Goldy."

Gold cooed and pulled herself closer to Lightning. Stone could barely hear her mumbling.

"Mmmm, like hugging a bedsheet fresh from the drier...."

Stone sighed as she ran a hoof across her neck.

"I suppose I'll have to tell you as much as I'm comfortable with, since there are some things that I'd rather not speak of. Only in time will Gold tell you."

"When I met Gold, she was different than she is now. At least sober. She was young, only twenty years old at the time. She's currently twenty-two. She was naive, curious, energetic, and all giving with a sharp wit to counter-balance it all. Something that wasn't good to have on the streets of Manehattan."

Stone sat back.

"Gold had come to Manehattan to 'find her independence', as she worded it. She was tired of being smothered in her hometown of Canterlot, so when she turned eighteen, she packed a bag, canteen, and her first radio headphones and left. She was supported by her family even. That gave her the confidence to take on the world."

"She told me the adventures she had in only a year before she came to Manehattan. Her stories ranged from finding lost ruins in the Everfree to finding a parasprite that could actually talk."

Stone's eyes seem to dim.

"But, the adventures came to an end when she came to Manehattan. She was shunned on the streets because ponies thought she was some sort of orphan or runaway. And they treated her like that. She took odd jobs to pay for food. But she never seem to lose that little glow in her eyes."

"Of course she soon ran into me. She had snuck into the training hall that I owned. Back then, I was a hoofboxing specialist. The very best in Manehattan. Of course, I never really got my due, since most of the students I got only wanted to gain the ability to kick someone's ass whenever they wanted to. If I ever found out, I immediately expelled them from the class. That got me a lot of guff from parents. But I stood strong."

"I was simply in my office, reading an angry letter from a rather influential parent when I heard a whole bunch of clattering noises. Lo-and-behold, I find Gold strung up on some exercising ropes, tied up like a bull in the rodeo. She didn't really look too good either. Gold was very sick from the flu bug that went through Manehattan awhile ago."

"I took pity on the helpless mare and gave her my bed and cared for her til she was better. To this day, Gold claims it was the 'motherly instinct' that I seem to possess. But even when she got better, she was quiet ans shy, never able to say more than two words to me. Manehattan had gotten to her."

Stone rubbed a hoof on her muzzle.

"I let her stay with me as an assistant until we could find a place for her to settle in at. I even began teaching her self-defense techniques. She learned pretty fast. I guess you could say that we became fast friends. But, as time went on, I started to...feel for Gold. She was the pony that could lift me off the ground, to put simply. But I could never find the courage to admit it, afraid I would destroy the friendship we already had. But I DID find the courage to ask her to move in with me."

She slumped in her seat.

"But things weren't all rainbows and butterflies. The parents, some rather rich, started to enact on their threats. Their kids especially. I was plagued with rocks being thrown through my windows and ponies try to break into my home. I was afraid, but I was afraid for Gold. I didn't want to be gone one day and come back to find her hurt."

"But it seems I wasn't the only one with enemies after all. Some of the stories Gold told me were true after all. She had gained enemies before she came to Manehattan, and they wanted their 'due'. Especially this one group of stallions. Their leader is probably the sickest thing I have ever had the displeasure of seeing. He had deep green eyes, a purple mane, and a gray coat. I never learned his name."

Stone's hoof was digging a hoof into the cushion she sat on. Her rage was making her take deep breaths in order to calm down.

"I...I can't really say anymore, for my sake, Gold's sake, and your sake. All I can say is that the experience in Manehattan had left us forever changed. Gold was a wreck and I was having nervous breakdowns almost everyday. It didn't help that after we got home, we learned that some colts had tried to burglarize our home and nearly burned it down in the process. They didn't take anything, but I knew that it wasn't safe in Manehattan anymore. And it had never been safe to begin with."

Stone sighed and put her face in her hooves.

"For Gold's sake, I sold my training hall and moved us back to Canterlot in hopes of giving Gold a friendly and familiar atmosphere. It took months of therapy for both me and Gold to recover from our experience in Manhattan. But it still ain't enough. Not anymore. Whenever Gold is put in...certain situations, she has a full blown panic attack that could result in the perpetrator being beaten to death by her hooves, and I've never found solitude or peace in my training anymore."

Stone was rubbing her eyes with her hooves.

"The rest is history, I guess you could say. I got a job at the local self-defense training hall, and Gold found out she was a wizard with electronics. Within a year, and a few favors from Fancy Pants, we managed to establish our electronics store and have made large profits off the electronic business. At least here, ponies still don't mind having their electronics fixed by hoof and don't simply throw it away and buy a new one. Although now, we can afford that too."

Stone sighed again, but now she had a small smile on her face.

"I still remember the therapy session that changed it all for us when we had first moved to Canterlot. The therapist said that Gold is my sanity's anchor. That if Gold is in distress, then I'm in distress. Goldy, still the curious one, asked me why that is. I admitted that I loved her, and I would rather be with her than anywhere else in the world."

Stone eyes glazed over a little.

"It started with tears of happiness, then to Gold's declaration of loving me as well, then finally to us sharing our first real kiss. And, well..."

Stone blushed as she scratched her mane.

"...It got to the point that the therapist excused herself, left, locked the door, and told everyone not to disturb us, because we were 'bonding'."

Stone groaned into her hooves, but she still had an embarrassed smile.

"I can't even describe how embarrassing it was for us to walk out there and have the entire staff applauding for us and wishing us the best of luck."

She sighed, but now sat up straighter.

"But everything has been pretty good til then. From meeting and saving Pyro from being admitted to the insane asylum to stopping a stallion that had been harassing Axle Nut because he prefers both genders."

Stone gazed lovingly at Gold, who was still clinging to Lightning.

"We had quite a few potholes in the road we travel, but I wouldn't trade it for anything."

She got up and sat next to Lightning. She scooted closer and wrapped a foreleg around her.

"Gold's influential love is infectious, is it not? At first, I was skeptical, but soon I grew to like the idea of having more than two in our relationship. Hell, we even had a fling with Pyro and Mist when they wondered what our relationship was about."

She leaned over and whispered into Lightning's ear.

"Both of them at the same time."

She pulled back a little with a smirk.

"When Gold started talking about you, I knew you had to be someone special for her to carry such interest. I figured it was just simply lust, but she spoke with a fire I haven't seen since she spoke of our relationship."

She nuzzled at Lightning.

"You saved Goldy's life, and ever since then, I think I fell in love with you as well, though mine wasn't as passionate as Gold's. If she doesn't mind, I don't mind. If she's happy, then I'm happy. And I know that you'll make us both happy, White Lightning. I have faith in you. And so does Gold."

Lightning smiled, pressing against Stone during her nuzzling. She wouldn't admit to it, but... it bothered her that was all she was comfortable with saying. Something terrible or plain unspeakable must have happened.

"Thanks. For sharing I mean."

She leaned back into the couch, downing another glass of wine. "I suppose it's only fair to tell you the same. What I'm comfortable with saying, at least."

Lightning took a deep breath "The oldest memory I have, is my mother telling me I wasn't her daughter. Well, that I wasn't the daughter she wanted. We were living in Scoltland at the time. The house out there is a fully restored castle, complete with an armory, a barracks, and its own dungeon. What I remember most about that place is that I was tolerated by my mother and loved by my father. He hailed my birth as the most magical thing the family had ever seen. My older sister Silver Ring fawned on me when she was able to, but her work required her to travel the world."

"I was five then. On my sixth birthday my father got sic. We didn't know for months, since he hid it from us, but he had been told that it was cancer. For over two years we fought to keep him alive, but he passed away when I was eight. After his funeral, my mother and my sister got into an argument over it. Specifically, over me."

"My mother believed that it was my fault that he got sick. If I had been a unicorn, there might have been enough magic in the family to save his life. My sister worked as a medical researcher, and knew full well that his condition was magic resistant. The very thought that it was my fault sent her reeling. She threatened to take me away from her, because of the neglect she was showing. The council, fearing a fight exiled her from the royal line."

"When we moved here, I thought things would be better. That we were starting over fresh and that daddy would want to see me happy."

Lightning poured herself another glass. "My mother remarried one of the Canterlot Elite, Prince Blueblood's brother, Noble Virtue. My mother's intolerance for me finally overpowered whatever restraint she had kept for the sake of my father. When I was seen at 'inappropriate' times, I was locked in my room. If I repeated the mistake, I was put in 'the other room'."

She downed some of the wine choking on it. "My mom had Ruby after they decided to put me in a school. But after a year of school, they pulled me out because of the display earning my cutie mark had caused. The family wasn't willing to take the blame for another catastrophic thunderstorm - the one almost 7 years ago, if you remember."

"So I spent my time at home, learning by myself. I wasn't allowed out of the house. Sometimes I wouldn't be let out of my room for a few days. The other room... it usually only a day or two. Except for once. I don't remember how long it was I was in there. I always assume it was a few days to make me feel less alone, but part of me is still trying to remember. I..." Lightning started to tear up. She was having trouble trying to get the words out. "I think I may have had that memory removed. Either by a friend or a family member. But it terrifies me. At night sometimes I can remember the voices above me and my mother saying that I was at a boarding school, and that I wanted to keep screaming but I knew that the spell wouldn't let me."

She sniffled a little. Lightning tried to take even breaths, to calm herself down. She couldn't remember the specifics, only that she was left alone down there, and no one ever came in. Not her father, not her mother, not even her baby sister, who cried at night because she'd missed her so badly. She could remember hearing the staff grabbing wine and moving boxes, and no matter how hard she screamed she wouldn't be let out. They didn't even know. They assumed she was locked in her room upstairs, so her mother left her whatever food was enough to keep her looking as though she was being cared for in the little elevator over the fireplace. It wasn't that she cared, she just wanted her to continue suffering.

"January first." Her voice cracked. "That's when I was put in there. I had made an appearance at the most important event of that year. I had also caught her at the most stressful party she'd ever planned. I ruined it for her. The next thing I remember is summer. The day... the day school ended. She let me into the library so I could watch them play."

She downed the rest of her glass and raised the bottle to her lips. It was there, teasing her at the edge of her mind. The madness she felt. The knowledge that her mother held her life in the balance. That she was the only one who knew where she was. And the horrible feeling that no one cared or questioned her mother. Even Ruby, who was too young to know how cruel she was.

Lightning placed the finished bottle on the table. A reasonable amount of silence passed, before she changed the subject. "I need something stronger than this. This won't get me anywhere close to where I need to be right now."

Stone paid rapt attention. But her eyes narrowed a little at Lightning's question.

"I don't think alcohol will help you with memory. Dulling your feelings won't help."

She leaned closer, her forehead touching Lightning's.

"I guess you already know the whole schtick about how a wound left to itself can either fester or heal. But pouring a drink will only make it worse."

She leaned up and kissed her forehead.

"I can't sympathize, because I could never know the hell you went through. I don't want you to think that you're obligated to share your past with me."

Her gaze was half lidded.

"But talking about it helps, but....I don't think a nightclub is the right location for it."

Stone gave a reassuring smile.

"Don't think so little of yourself, White. Just remember that Gold and I are here for you."

She leaned back as she pointed a hoof towards the door.

"Do you maybe want to go home for the night? I suppose I have a few bottles of scotch lying around. We could finish this party at our home."

Lightning nodded. The drink had barely affected her, but the atmosphere that had been spun here left more to be desired. Even with hordes of ponies, she would much rather spend some time alone with her new marefriends. She hesitated for a moment, before leaving a light kiss on Stone's lips.

"Thanks for listening."

Stone smiled as she pulled Gold off of Lightning and placed her on her back, where the mare gripped her with her legs.

"It's no problem, Lightning. It's what I do."

Stone walked over and pulled the lock on the door and opened it.

She was less than pleased to see a group of colts and mares standing closer than what was necessary to the door. And the fact the colts had been pressing their ears against the door didn't help with her mood.

"Don't even try to, you asshats. I know for a fact that these doors are enchanted with sound-proofing spells."

Stone shoved forward and carved a swath through the crowd. Her keen hearing picked up some speak from the colts and fillies.

"Aw man! I thought I was gonna see some hot action! What a damn waste!"

"SSHH! She might hear you!"

"Who?! The walking wall with the hot tail on her back?!"

Stone growled and picked up the pace, but made sure that Lightning was following her. She scanned the crowd, but couldn't seem to find Princess Luna. The mosh was too thick.

She looked back at Lightning.

"Alright, same as before, but try staying closer to me. It'll be hard to keep my bearings with Gold on my back. We'll go out the way we came."

Lightning did her best to follow Stone through the crowds of ponies. She felt extremely cramped and uncomfortable. In the distance she could still hear some of the ponies catcalling for her or Gold.

Just ignore them.

By the time they got to the surface, she realized that everyone in the area was at least a little bit tipsy. Some of the ponies in the line were wavering back and forth or giggling madly at something mundane.

"We came down those stairs I think..." she trailed off, her words falling apart upon seeing the stallions from earlier. Walking towards them.

Stone growled as she took a step back. She slid Gold off her back and placed her on the ground.

She looked at Lightning.

"Watch her. If it gets too thick, I want you to runaway with her."

She reached into her satchel with a hoof.

"Go forward."

She pulled out a small, thick stick that was about as long as her hoof width.

"Never look back."

The stallions were close, and were grinning as though they had just won the lottery. One of them perked up.

"Hey Stoner! Never thought I'd see you of all ponies here! I see you're still selling yourself off like a cheap prostitute to that hot piece of ass that hangs around you."

Stone growled. But then she grinned like a rattlesnake.

"Brass Ring. I see the facial correction surgery went well. After all, when they found you curled up and crying, I'd knocked out most of your teeth and rearranged your jaw."

He snapped back.

"It didn't have to be this way, Stone! You could've just walked away! But yet you still guard that little bitch like some kind of dog! My boss was going to make me rich with that bitch tied in a neat bow for his pleasure!"

Stone slammed a hoof against the ground. She threw her hoof out, the wooden peg extending to a large metal rod that was as long as her leg.

Gold shifted on the ground. Her eyes were closed, but she looked like she was having a nightmare. Her hooves were over her head. She murmured.

"....Raining night....dark alley....trapped...."

The group was getting closer.

Stone yelled again.

"Stay back! Or you will regret it!"

Brass Ring yelled back.

"An eye for an eye Stone! You ruined my life!"

Ponies were starting to gather to watch, wondering what the commotion was.

"So now...."

He looked at Lightning and Gold and grinned.

"I'm going to ruin yours."

Stone started muttering to herself.

"Five targets. Unarmed. Must protect White and Gold."

Lightning growled, putting herself clearly in front of Gold.

"I would suggest you all back off and walk away while you still have the chance," Lightning snarled. "Fighting is punishable by law. Should you start a fight, I will have no choice to arrest you."

Brass Ring laughed, making his silver mohawk shake. A single orange glowstick was around his neck, making his orange fur glow.

"What? Is the little runt going to report me? Last I checked, you were the door mat to your bitch mother. Never liked nobles anyways. You all think you're such hot shit because you have more than us."

The group was closer.

Gold was starting to cry.

"Well, looks like we're gonna get to have a piece of noble ass guys! Not like anyone will want her anyways!"

He pointed a hoof.

"Get them!"

The group charged at Stone, Gold, and Lightning.

Stone stepped forward and threw the baton up, hitting a stallion in the throat and knocking him off his forehooves. She then spun and kicked him, knocking onto his back. She slammed a hoof on his head and knocked him out.

Gold whimpered as she opened her eyes.

"...dark alley....rain....no escape..."

Two more charged at Stone. She stood on her hindlegs and brought her forelegs down, knocking one away and knocking out one. The one that was knocked away ran headlong into a table that had been placed outside.

Stone didn't pity the crash.

"If you want revenge Brass! You shouldn't use damn, desperate boozehounds."

Her vision shook and her mind slowed when she felt the chair connect with her head.

Stone fell to the ground with blood flowing off her forehead, dazed.

"It's not you I want Stone!"

He charged at Gold and Lightning, a carving knife in his teeth.

Gold clutched her satchel. The image of a bloodied Stone stayed burned into her eyes.

Brass Ring ran towards Lightning.

"YOU'RE GONNA DIE BI-argh!"

Everyone was silent. The onlookers gasped. The drunks knew fear. Stone stared wide-eyed and horror-stricken.

Brass Ring, through the pain, looked down...

...and at Gold Andromeda. Her eyes wide and vacant. Her expression was blank. Tears fell down her cheeks.

Her butterfly knife lay clutched in her hoof, with the blade in Brass Ring's side.

She yelled as she pulled the blade out and slashed at his face, carving a red trail across his cheek and mouth.

Gold flew forward and tackled him into the ground, where she then grabbed him, hauled him up, and threw him into another table.

He grunted in pain as Gold grabbed him again. She throw him forward and his head connected with a wall. He started to slide down, but Gold grabbed his mane and shoved his head forward, slamming it into the brick and glass.

Gold grabbed his shoulder and spun him around, the knife point being pressed into his throat as his back pressed against the wall.

Gold still held no expression.

"...You call me a bitch huh?....Call Lightning a door mat, huh?...."

The blade slipped away from Brass's throat, but it continued to travel south. Brass's eyes widened and his pleas started.

"JUST LET ME GO! JUST LET ME GO! I'LL LEAVE YOU ALONE FOREVER!"

"I don't believe you. You need to be taught a lesson that mares aren't toys."

"I DON'T THINK THAT!"

"You lie..."

"Gold...stop. Please."

The knife stopped. Gold blinked, but didn't look back.

"I'll be with you in a sec, Stone. I'm busy right now."

A hoof rested on Gold's neck.

"I'm sorry."

The knife clattered as it was dropped by Gold, who was thrown face-first into the wall. She dropped Brass and landed on her shaky hooves. She wobbled as she turned and faced Stone, who had tears in her eyes mixing with the blood going down her face. Gold's eyes watered, but started to close as blood came from her nose.

"...Stone..."

She looked towards Lightning.

"...Lightning....I'm sorry..."

Stone stepped forward and caught her on her large back. She grabbed the butterfly knife and shoved it into her satchel, Gold's satchel also around her neck.

Brass looked up at the hulking mare.

"OH THANK YOU STONE! THANK YO-"

He was cut off by the hoof that slammed into his head, knocking him out.

Stone looked around, but lost the stallion that had hit her with the chair.

She looked back at Lightning.

"Run. Now!"

Lightning stood shocked at what had just happened. She didn't even see Gold pull out that knife before she was already brandishing it as a weapon. It happened so quickly that she didn't hear Stone calling for her to go. She looked up and forced herself forward - toward the stallion who started it. Brass Ring was it?

"What is the meaning of this?" Came the booming voice from behind her.

Lightning whipped around to see the assembly of ponies on their knees as Princess Luna strode forward. She babbled a few bits of nonsense before pointing at the stallion lying unconscious on the ground. Luna nodded to her guards who hefted the unconscious stallion on their backs.

"You will give me a full report tomorrow. If not, I will be forced to intrude on your memory of this event. Good evening, my student."

With that Luna took to the air, and floated out through the open parts of the glass siding, followed closely by her guards.

Lightning looked at Stone and Gold. "You're coming back to the castle with me. It will be safe there."

Stone trotted quickly through the snow towards the castle, an unconscious Gold on her back.

She looked back at Lightning. Stone's body was steaming from the blood pumping through her veins, the blood going down her face having coagulated a little in the cold. Her body still surged with some adrenaline.

And anger.

"That was the panic attacks I was talking about."

She spoke through gritted teeth.

"Whenever Gold is put in a helpless situation, her need to survive unharmed overcomes her judgement. This is why I won't speak of what happened in Manehattan, because that incident is the reason why psychiatrists and doctors look at Gold like some sort of medical marvel that should be put away in a straightjacket. They always told me that Gold was a dangerous case that needed special help."

She stamped a hoof in the snow.

"I'll die before I let them fill her full of pills and lock her away from society!"

Stone kept trotting.

"And Brass Ring..."

She scoffed.

"He was one of MY enemies in Manehattan. Back then, Gold had been working as a waitress and he had given her a large tip in an attempt to get her to date him. She turned him down. He didn't think she did. He thought Gold was playing hard to get."

She kicked a rock as the castle started coming into view.

"When I took Gold in, he had thought I had stolen her from him. The chauvinist tried to join my classes so he could be near her. I removed him on the third day when he purposely touched her flank."

Stone shook her head.

"He's held a vendetta against me since. He no longer treats Gold like a jewel, but instead he started treating her like some kind of toy whenever he ran into her. He even took a job from some small crooks who tried to steal from me and Gold. He failed and got caught by me. I heard it took doctors over five hours to reconstruct his face after what I have done to him."

They were close to the gate. Stone looked back at Lightning.

"I hope you can forgive us for showing you how our true hatred can be. I wouldn't blame you for not wanting anything to do with us anymore."

She slowed down as she closed her eyes.

"It would be hazardous to your health if you stayed."

"It won't happen again, I'm sure. At least not with Brass Ring. He threatened a Tribal Leader and came at her with a knife. Even if for some reason that's still in dispute, it is clear that I'm Princess Luna's student. That's an insult to royalty."

Lightning slammed her hoof on the ground. Athough she didn't notice it, some of the ponies wandering around noticed the electric arcs that sunk into the ground.

"Had she not intervened I might have killed him. I'm lucky she panicked," she grimaced. "I'm not happy about the circumstances. Will she be ok?"

Stone stopped.

"Gold will be despondent when she wakes up. As though she's deep in thought. If that doesn't happen, she'll become scared, thinking that bad ponies will be after her, trying to kill her."

Stone lowered her head.

"It becomes harder and harder to make her relax the more she has a relapse. I once even had to fill her with a painkiller in order to help her sleep at night."

She looked back at Lightning.

"She'll usually come around and return to herself when she has a nice sleep without any nightmares."

Stone felt tears flowing down her cheeks.

"Every time it happens, I stay up all night, holding her until she stops crying. It's starting to become hard to even convince myself that things will be alright."

She looked over at Lightning.

"So far we've lived here, she's had over five relapses, all resulting in her seriously hurting a pony and nearly killing them."

Stone's head dropped.

"The hospital is always telling me that I need to help Gold, or else she'll be locked away for committing murder. I wouldn't be surprised if they showed up tomorrow with big ponies in white, telling me that it's time to say goodbye to Gold."

Her head shot up, and her eyes burned in rage.

"As I said, they'll have to pull her from my dead body if they want her."

She turned her head and nuzzled at Gold's injured nose.

"I guess we better get going. It'll take both our love to help her from this one."

She looked over at Lightning again.

"Can I count on you to help when your marefriend is in need?"

Lightning nodded. "I love her just as much as you do. I'll be there for her, but... I might be able to talk to the princesses. Maybe they can help without having to take her away or force feeding her pills."

She trotted through the front gate of the castle, nodding to the guards on duty. It took about twenty minutes to get to her room, which she entered with a sigh. "If you want to deal with it outside of professional help, I'll do my best. But I really hope I don't see something like that again. It... it scared me."

She nuzzled Gold's limp form, planting a kiss on her forehead.

The room was well furnished, complete with an armoire, a huge bed - big enough for the three of them plus room, and a fully stocked bathroom. There were a few unopened bottles of wine sitting on her desk in the corner - gifts for her stay.

"If you want to clean her up some, I'll make the bed and grab you a glass of wine."

Stone nodded as she went to the bathroom door, but she stopped suddenly. She looked over at Lightning with a very sad expression.

"...I...I'm afraid that I may not be able to keep that promise, White. But I'll do my best to prevent them...."

Her expression then went neutral.

"And Lightning...?

Her lips curved into a small smile.

"I'm glad that you finally said that you loved Gold, without any hesitation. And I'll appreciate any help you can offer."

She stepped into the bathroom without bothering to close the door. She quickly grabbed a washcloth, soaked it in hot water, and came back out.

Stone laid Gold on her stomach and pulled her head up and her forelegs down. She took in the mare quickly. Her nose was bloody and blood, not her own, coated her right hoof. She dabbed the washcloth against Gold's nose gently, being mindful of how it was now swelling up from the impact. Stone cursed herself.

"Wish I could've found a way to stop her without resorting to violence. Brass may have deserved it in my mind, but I wasn't ready to let Gold have HIS blood on HER hooves."

With the blood gone, Stone moved to her hoof.

"I guess I could use that glass of wine now. After we put her to bed."

Lightning helped Stone maneuver Gold under the covers, leaving enough room for them to slip in next to her when they were finally exhausted. She hoofed over a glass of wine to Stone, taking her own in one shot.

"It really pays to be a bartender," she lamented. "You learn how to hold your own alcohol by the first week, and then you can never get drunk unless you really try." She poured herself another glass and downed that one as well.

She stared down at the last drips in her glass. "Hey, Stone? Would it be alright if... I kissed you again?"

Stone's eyes widened only a little, but she smiled a relaxed smile. After downing her wine in one go, she leaned forward and wrapped her forelegs around Lightning, and pulling her closer.

"I may not know if it's the wine, but I don't care."

Her smile gained a small, impish curve, turning it somewhat devilish.

"It only makes sense that you kiss me, since you've already kissed Gold without hesitating."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"I would've kissed you before, but you seemed uncomfortable, maybe even a little afraid."

She leaned forward even more, the larger mare's breath mingling with White's.

"But yes, you can kiss me, Lightning. But..."

Her gaze was half-lidded.

"...only if you start it. And prove that you know you won't become a burden to us."
